The representation of the Suppliant Goddess on Syrian and Syrianizing art and its development in the second millennium B.C.
The representation of the Suppliant Goddess on Syrian and Syrianizing art and its development in the second millennium B.C.
The following study is a comprehensive investigation of the iconography of the Suppliant Goddess in Syrian and Syrianizing art, specifically glyptic material in the second millennium B.C. Although this deity has its origins in Mesopotamia, she was ever-present on the cylinder seals of Syria and its immediate neighbouring regions, such as Anatolia and the Levant. This study has accumulated nearly 500 seals, sealings, and seal impressions and examined the visual representations of the deity. Additionally, the presented study investigates the terminology related to the Suppliant Goddess, namely the goddess Lamma, in the textual sources from the Ancient Near East. The study also suggests that the deity had been localized in the Syrian glyptic traditions.
