Abstract

Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt die erste umfassende Untersuchung zur Ikonographie des mesopotamischen Sonnengottes dar, die den gesamten historischen Zeitraum Mesopotamiens berücksichtigt. Im Zentrum steht die diachrone Entwicklung seiner Darstellung – sowohl im Hinblick auf ikonographische Merkmale als auch auf deren funktionale und semantische Bedeutung im jeweiligen kulturellen Kontext. Auf der Grundlage eines Korpus von knapp 1100 Bildwerken – primär aus der Glyptik – wird untersucht, wie sich seine Darstellung im Verlauf der Jahrtausende veränderte und welche ikonographischen Merkmale tradiert, transformiert oder aufgegeben wurden. Diese Veränderungen werden im Zusammenhang mit kulturellen, sozialen und politischen Umbrüchen interpretiert, wobei theoretische Ansätze der Kultur- und Bildwissenschaften, insbesondere der Gedächtnistheorie, zur Anwendung kommen.

Abstract

This study presents the first comprehensive investigation of the iconography of the Mesopotamian sun god, encompassing the entire historical period of Mesopotamia. At its core is the diachronic development of his depiction – both in terms of iconographic features and their functional and semantic significance within the respective cultural context. Based on a corpus of nearly 1,100 visual works – primarily from glyptic art – the study examines how his representation changed over the millennia, and which iconographic elements were preserved, transformed, or abandoned. These shifts are interpreted in relation to cultural, social, and political upheavals, drawing on theoretical approaches from cultural and visual studies, with particular emphasis on memory theory.
