Abstract

This dissertation consists of four independent chapters and empirically examines the economics of digital platforms. All essays deal with different aspects of digital platforms, either with their design or with how phenomena of the offline world are reflected in the online world. The spatial proximity between knowledge workers on digital platforms and its significance for productivity is the focus of the first chapter. The second chapter focuses on labor market signals as a motivation to contribute on digital platforms. The third chapter discusses the importance of peers on large digital platforms for project activity and popularity. Finally, the fourth essay deals with the design of platforms and the possibilities of creating incentives for actors to provide content and control the quality of content.

Abstract

Diese Dissertation besteht aus vier unabhängigen Kapiteln und untersucht empirisch die Ökonomie digitaler Plattformen. Alle Aufsätze befassen sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten digitaler Plattformen, entweder mit ihrer Gestaltung oder damit, wie sich Phänomene der Offline-Welt in der Online-Welt widerspiegeln. Die räumliche Nähe zwischen Wissensarbeitern auf digitalen Plattformen und ihre Bedeutung für die Produktivität steht im Mittelpunkt des ersten Kapitels. Das zweite Kapitel fokussiert sich auf Arbeitsmarktsignale als Motivation auf digitalen Plattformen beizutragen. Im dritten Kapitel wird die Bedeutung von Gleichgesinnten auf großen digitalen Plattformen für Projektaktivität und Popularität behandelt. Der vierte Aufsatz schließlich beschäftigt sich mit der Gestaltung von Plattformen und den Möglichkeiten, Anreize für Akteure zu schaffen, Inhalte bereitzustellen und die Qualität der Inhalte zu kontrollieren.
