Abstract

This thesis seeks to contribute to research in the fields of creolistics, sociolinguistics and phonetics by providing an in-depth acoustic description of the vowel system(s) of 33 Bahamian Creole speakers from Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, taking into account the social countenance of synchronic variation. Results are related to the historical development of Bahamian Creole and to its position at the linguistic crossroads of the Americas.

Abstract

Diese Dissertation ist an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kreolistik, Soziolinguistik und akustischer Phonetik angesiedelt. Das Ziel der Studie besteht darin, eine detaillierte akustische Analyse des Vokalsystems der Bahamesischen Kreolsprache wie sie in Nassau, der Hauptstadt der Bahamas, gesprochen wird, vorzulegen. Aufgrund des Mangels an Forschungsarbeiten zur Phonetik und Phonologie von Kreolsprachen im Allgemeinen hat die Studie zunächst einen deskriptiven Schwerpunkt, wobei kontextuelle, soziale und stilistische Variation berücksichtigt und die beobachteten Phänomene darüber hinaus kreolistisch bzw. varietätenlinguistisch eingeordnet werden.
