Abstract

The aim of this work is to synthesise new mono- and polynuclear ferric carbohydrate complexes from alkaline aqueous solution in order to identify reoccurring structural patterns. The influence of the different ligands on the stability and structure of the formed complex species, and the impact the compounds’ structure has on their magnetic properties is of particular interest. This is achieved by applying Evans NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy to the ferric carbohydrate solutions and, subsequently, comparing the gathered data to SQUID and X-ray measurements obtained from crystalline compounds. To allow diamagnetic NMR studies, iron is substituted for aluminium and gallium and the similarities and differences among the obtained compounds are discussed.
