Peripartum mental health problems substantially affect maternal well-being, child development and mother-infant-bonding and, due to these far-reaching consequences, are of particular relevance to research. Potential prepartal influencing factors remain underexplored, although understanding them is crucial for the development of appropriate treatment approaches. Based on the current literature, it is hypothesized that the prepartum bonding reduces the negative influence of the maternal psychopathology on postpartum bonding. As of today, to the author´s knowledge, there are no studies investigating prenatal maternal bonding as a moderator. Within the framework of the first hypothesis, maternal psychopathology was assessed using the structured clinical interview for DSM-IV (axis I disorders, SCID-I). Maternal depressive symptoms were measured with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and the maternal anxiety symptoms with the questionnaire on body-related anxieties, cognitions, and avoidance (AKV), more precisely with the subscale agoraphobic cognitions questionnaire (ACQ). Furthermore, prepartum bonding was assessed using the maternal fetal attachment scale (MFAS), and postpartum bonding using the postpartum bonding questionnaire (PBQ). Unfortunately, the results of the moderation analyses testing the central hypotheses I to III showed no significance. The findings of this dissertation highlight the need for further empirical studies. In particular, the central hypotheses should be examined using a larger sample with more homogeneous disorder groups. This would allow not only the examination of the presumed significance, but also it could enable more specific conclusions regarding isolated disorder groups and different severity levels of symptomatology. Additionally, further influencing factors beyond prepartum bonding (e. g. relationship quality) should be explored. The dissemination of the knowledge gained from such research may contribute to destigmatization. The goal should be an early treatment of peripartum psychological symptoms, ideally already early in pregnancy.
