Application of non-local convection theories to stellar evolution. convective envelopes and massive main-sequence stars
Convection is one of the main energy transport mechanisms in stars, and has a large influence on their interior structure and evolution. 1D convection models are required because 3D simulations only cover short timescales and small regions compared to a star's full lifetime and size. In 1D stellar evolution codes, convection is typically modelled with mixing length theory. The Kuhfuss turbulent convection models aim to improve convective modelling, and comprise a 1‑equation and a more physically complete 3‑equation version. In this work, I studied whether these models reproduce the interior structures of the Sun, A-type stars, and massive main-sequence stars better than mixing length theory. I calculated solar calibrated models with the 1- and 3-equation model. The predicted and observed sound speed profiles disagree when using the 1-equation model. This is due to the assumption of proportionality between the convective flux and the superadiabatic temperature gradient. The 3-equation model, which does not apply this approximation, improves the solar sound speed profile. However, it predicts an unrealistic, negative temperature gradient in the outer layers. This artefact is caused by the closure relations applied to the equations for the convective flux and/or the second order entropy fluctuations. The 3-equation model accurately predicts the interaction of the sub-photospheric convection layers of A-type stars. However, the non-local closure relations cause the convective flux and the turbulent velocity to be significantly smaller compared to other simulations. This highlights the need for better closure relations in order to capture the main physics of convection. For stars with masses of 9 -- 20 Msun, the 1‑equation model predicts convective boundary mixing largely independent of stellar mass, while the 3‑equation model predicts that it increases with stellar mass. The latter behaviour is in agreement with 2D/3D simulations, but at odds with the newest observations. In summary, I applied the Kuhfuss turbulent convection models to various convective regions, demonstrating their strengths, limitations, and key areas for improvement., Konvektion ist ein zentraler Energietransportmechanismus in Sternen und prägt deren innere Struktur und Entwicklung.
