Abstract
Abstract
This thesis presents an analysis of the behaviour of poloidally localized, but toroidally symmetric radiating zones near the H-mode density limit in magnetically confined fusion devices using the tokamak configuration. These are introduced as multifaceted asymmetric radiation from the edge (MARFE) in literature and are a precursor of disruptions caused by exceeding the density limit. A disruption is characterized by a rapid loss of plasma confinement and current and has to be avoided or at least mitigated in bigger experiments due to the higher energy content. While the MARFE’s role as precursor is well established its dynamics when approaching the disruption are not well analysed. A two-dimensional tracking of the radiation maximum using multiple diode bolometer cameras enables the characterisation of the MARFE behaviour. In diverted plasmas it originates at the X-point and movesalong the inner side of the torus to the plasma top. There, it continues radially inwards and towards the outer side of the torus, where it triggers magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities which ultimately lead to the disruption. For further investigation, this work introduces a time-resolved one dimensional power diffusion model in a flux tube along a magnetic field line. Radial transport is implemented as sources and sinks in MarfeModel and the pressure is held constant in time and space. Line radiation from nitrogen is used as a proxy for other possible power loss channels like charge exchange processes, ionization, recombination, and bremsstrahlung. Radial transport is assumed to be ballooning-dominated and the power source is therefore located around the outer mid-plane. The simulation is started with a cold region half-way along the magnetic field line. In MarfeModel, the MARFE is a cold, dense region with a ionisation front at both ends that extends across the inner side of the torus. The experimental MARFE behaviour is qualitatively reproduced by identifying the radiation maximum with the ionisation front moving away from the X-point. The MARFE moves moves radially inwards from the edge and follows the simulation results with cold, dense regions on the respective flux surfaces until it reaches the upper end of the plasma. As soon as more power is radiated than is introduced into the plasma, the MARFE becomes unstable. The cold, dense region then spreads until the entire flux tube is cooled down. Experimental measurements show a temperature gradient between outer and inner side of the torus, which qualitatively confirms the results. Differences in MARFE behaviour depending on plasma shape can be explained with MarfeModel.
