Synaptic physiology of urocortin 3, an ancient pleiotropic neuropeptide
Neuropeptides are relatively less known compared to classic neurotransmitters. However, they are frequently found in the brain of mammals. In particular, the neuropeptide Urocortin 3, an evolutionarily conserved neuropeptide that developed before the establishment of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal stress axis, has a widespread expression in many organs and cell types in mice. In this work, we investigated the location and functional significance of the presence of Urocortin 3 in the auditory brainstem of laboratory mice and we described in detail, through thorough electrophysiological examinations both in vitro and in vivo, its role at a giant central nervous system synapse, the calyx of Held.

Abstract
