Selektive Entwurmung der Pferde in einer Pferdepraxis, Selective anthelmintic treatment of horses in an equine practice. Einführung sowie wissenschaftliche und betriebswirtschaftliche Analyse, Introduction as well as scientific and economic analysis
The 1,232 faecal samples taken from 518 horses out of 121 farms in the practice region were examined in accordance with the specified procedure. If necessary the horses were treated with an anthelmintic drug in compliance with the specified threshold value ≥ 200 strongyle eggs per gram of faeces (EpG). At the same time the economic and organisational effects of the new offer were examined and rated. The result of the strongyle prevalence among the horses was 57.0% and 73.5% of the farms. Overall, at most only 26.1% of all the participating horses had to be subjected to an anthelmintic treatment (from 13.2% of all farms). 93 horses (18.0%) exceeded the threshold value of 200 EpG once, 37 horses (7.1%) did so twice and five horses (1.0%) three times. 518 first, 308 second, 184 third and 72 fourth monitoring samples were sent in during the year of the investigation. In 120 necessary treatments using Pyrantel among all of the treated horses a >90% reduction in the number of eggs was determined in 77.50% of the horses treated with the tetrahydropyrimidine class of active substances. In the case of the macrocyclic lactone ivermectin a >95% reduction in the number of eggs of was found in all of the necessary treatments. The introduction of selective anthelmintic treatment in the equine practice resulted in an increase in the number of new customers. Although by comparison with the previous year, 2010, the turnover from the sale of anthelmintics had dropped by 8% in 2011, overall the turnover in the field of horse-related parasitology rose 110.14% compared to the previous year. The Folder and Homepage marketing components used were received well. The programmed spreadsheet program also met the essential expectations; however its further development should be one of the main objectives. Selective anthelmintic treatment is a procedure involving coproscopic examinations in accordance with the principles of evidence-based veterinary medicine. It can be introduced very well in an existing equine practice and is very practicable.
